Jeff Pickering discusses the end of the year tax with Patrick Dougher, host of The Business Spotlight. Together Jeff and Pat have put together this video series, entitled Tax Talk, and are using Google+ Hangouts for the first time so people can join in and ask questions. (Reminder: getting answers from Jeff on taxes does not make you a client of his, and he can not represent you in tax discussions unless you pay him for his service).
As the end of the year approaches you want to wrap up any spending, and see what you can carry over until the next year and still take a deduction – like surgeries, IRA, 401K contributions, HSA and more. Make sure you have receipts to back up what you claim as deductions.
Tax Talk is being presented as a way for people to speak to a professional on taxes one on one and see if they need to seek out his service, or that of another tax expert, before they file their taxes.
Jeff does tax planning as well as taxes, and he says some changes in the tax laws could be a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, he recommends not doing your taxes yourself, especially if you own a business, because programs sold publicly do not always address issues that, if ignored, could come back to cause you expensive problems.
This Tax Talk edition is just one of many discussions Pat and Jeff will put on to help people get through tax season.
