Joyce Barrie interviews Patrick Dougher, host of The Business Spotlight TV show and CEO of Success Business, whose passion is to help others get what they want. Today’s show is about creating instant rapport with your clients.
Joyce says when she has trouble finding a guest for her show, Patrick always comes through for her and finds just the right one – she refers to him as her “fairy godfather.”
The host’s job is to make the guest shine in the best possible light. There are so many different personality types, and you need to know how to interact with people to bring out their best so they can present their topics effectively. Creating instant rapport is knowing how to handle and react to those different personality types. If you really want to create instant rapport it has to show up in the first few moments.
According to Patrick there are seven basic personal traits that someone needs to understand to create instant rapport:
1) Mercy – They are always the person that finds the good in other people. They are more concerned with the emotional distress of others. Tends to be indecisive because they are afraid of offending others. Don’t like to say no. Need to know their bounds so they can learn to say no to others.
2) Teachers – Love to read, but tend to lack the logical applications. Tend to be emotionally self-controlled. Devours all the information around them, and love to share what they learn, but others don’t always want to hear it.
3) Service – These are the doers, the worker bees. They will show up early, stay late, and help with the dishes at a party. They actually see the socks on the floor and pick it up. Recognize needs and move to act on it. They tend to overextend themselves. They need to hear the appreciation, and need to be recognized – it’s like oxygen to them. They don’t like to delegate. Tend to be a perfectionist, and are critical of others who don’t work as hard as they do.
4) Giving – Have the ability to attract the resources, whatever they might be, for the need in front of them. Love to give without others knowing about it. They are rare, but when they do show up they follow through to fill the need.
5) Professing – They will tell you the truth, even if you don’t want to hear it. They see the fly in the ointment. They see things in either black or white – few gray areas. Frank and outspoken – may be blunt. Strong opinions and convictions, and can be very intolerant of those who don’t agree. May struggle with self-esteem problems. Truth by itself can damage and break. Truth in love can heal. These people must learn to cushion their truth, and be constructive rather than destructive.
6) Exertation – Someone who can walk into the room and command the room. They have so much energy they are able to convince others they can do it. They encourage others.
7) Administration – Highly motivated and organized. They create order from chaos. They assume management responsibilities when no one else steps up. Are willing to step back and let others take credit. They are perceived as being bossy, but let others run if they want to.
These person possesses one, or more, of these traits. If you are able to recognize these traits in your guests or clients, you can understand how to develop a rapport with them. It’s not what you are, it’s what they are.
