Forget Hollywood’s rendition of what hypnotist and hypnotherapy is all about. Ed Lewellan, noted hypnotherapist and executive coach, tells you what hypnotherapy is, and what it can do.
In this Google Hangout session with Ed Lewellan and Patrick Doer, host of The Business Spotlight television program, the possibilities of hypnotherapy are explored and myths debunked.
According to Lewellan, hypnotherapy can help you achieve your goal in a much shorter time than coaching because you go through your subconscious mind as opposed to your conscious mind. What differentiates psychotherapy from psychotherapy is the conscious mind vs. the unconscious mind. In our brains the conscious mind is the gatekeeper to your subconscious mind, and stops thoughts from penetrating through to the critical thinking. Psychotherapy goes back into history to learn WHY people do the things they do, whereas hypnotherapy doesn’t worry about the why, but concentrates on “how to fix” a problem.
You do not have to share personal information with a hypnotherapist, unlike a psychotherapist. To a hypnotherapist, why you became phobic, or got your particular condition does not always get you to how to fix the problem. In hypnotherapy they go straight to solving the problem, and circumvents a lot of time wasted trying to psychoanalyze the subject. It is the subconscious vs. the conscious mind – a battle of wills. This is why when someone tells you that you just need more willpower to achieve your goal (like losing weight) they are mistaken – it will not work. Your conscious mind says you can do it while your subconscious mind is telling you that you need to eat.
Ed Lewellan helps people to change their belief systems – something very strongly entrenched into their subconscious mind. When you change your beliefs, and open your mind, you are able to open yourself up to new possibilities. A person can literally learn to separate their emotions from their thought process. This makes for a huge change, and it can literally be seen to transform before your very eyes.
PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) victims can be helped by hypnotherapy. Once they are able to remove the emotional block, the correct and necessary chemicals in the brain start flowing again and they are able to see things for what they really are. People with PTSD lack certain chemicals to keep the thought process slowed down, and hypnotherapy is able to literally change their brain patterns to allow those chemicals to flow freely again, and in a very short period of time.
Come to your session with a relaxed attitude and a positive attitude and you will be amazed at the amount of change you will see in yourself before you walk away.
“An emotion can’t last more than 90 seconds unless our brain picks up and builds a circuit to involve it.” – Neuroscientist Jill Bolt-Taylor. We tend to hold on to the negative emotions, and this causes stress.
