Marketing Ladders and Duality, with Dave Swift
Marketing Ladders and Duality, with Dave Swift, from Patrick Dougher on Vimeo.
Marketing involves stages, which are called Marketing Ladders. Instead of doing things all at once, you do it in stages, climbing the ladder to success. This is done with what marketing experts call Marketing Ladders.
In this edition of The Business Spotlight, host Patrick Dougher speaks with Marketing Guru Dave Swift about Marketing Ladders and duality in marketing.
Dave Swift is a graduate of Stanford, and has worked for Proctor & Gamble; Frito Lay; Johnson & Johnson; Pepsi Cola, and various other large corporations that have helped him to gain his experience in the marketing field. (new paragraph) What are Marketing Strategies? What can we do to better market our business? This video could be used as a trainer for business owners who are seeking marketing strategies to enhance, brand and increase their business.
Building marketing ladders involves laying out a plan in which you present your various ideas in stages, on different platforms like social media, building a website, sending out email marketing, networking, etc.. It is important to how to position yourself in the marketplace – what would you do that is different and sets you apart from the crowd? What is needed for your business? (new paragraph) Start-ups need new customers, so acquisition is important. How are you pricing yourself? High/Low; everyday low; etc. all areas have to work together. This is a strategy. Marketing is what creates perception in the eyes of the public.

Marketing Guru Dave Swift Explains the First 6 Laws of Marketing
Marketing Guru Dave Swift tells Patrick Dougher, of The Business Spotlight TV show, the first six laws of Marketing in this interview.
While many people think of marketing as advertising, they need to understand that marketing is much more than advertising. As a matter of fact, advertising is simply an element of marketing, just as promotions are. Almost everything a vender tries to sell you is an element of marketing, but is not marketing itself.
Dave is a graduate of Stanford, has worked for Proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Pepsi Cola, and various other large corporations. He became the Senior Marketer for Greyhound, and CEO for other marketing firms.
To understand marketing you need to understand the laws of marketing so you can better choose which level of marketing you will need in order to achieve your objective. Take an individual market and determining what strategies are best for improving and getting your message out.
A market is an area, part of a triangle that includes the questions – Where is the product or service purchased? Who are your customers or niche, and what are their characteristics? Who is the competition? It starts with the demographics, and fulfills the need for those in that particular demographic area.

Mary Swift DDS on Smiles By Mary Invisalign
Dallas dentist, Dr. Mary Swift, DDS speaks with The Business Spotlight host (and her patient), Patrick Dougher about her Smiles by Mary practice, and Invisalign braces in particular.
Dr. Swift’s team at Dallas Laser Dentistry are recipients of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 recipient of the Consumer Choice Award for dentistry in the Dallas area. She also is the recent recipient of the Angie’s List Super Service Award. She makes a point of saying it is a team effort, and she is very proud of her team. They have excellent reviews.
Dr. Swift tells of how she has had patients who have had expensive dental work done and they broke down – mostly, she says, because they did not have alignment done before the cosmetic work was. Lack of alignment can cause problems down the road.
As we age our teeth move, just like other parts of our body, even if you have had braces before.
Invisalign has been around for nearly 20 years, but research and development has brought it from simple use for overcrowding to what it can do today to improve overall health. Invisalign braces are good for most, although not all, patients. Their lightweight structure makes them easy to wear, and they are so clear that most people won’t even know you are wearing them.
Dr. Swift’s Smiles by Mary office, otherwise known as Dallas Laser Dentistry, is one of the few in the Dallas area that digitally scans the patient’s mouth. A computer generated image replaces the old and often sickening clay impressions. No muss, no fuss. Use of the computer gives more precise measurements, which enables a more perfect smile.
Smiles by Mary offers all types of dental work for their patients, and they welcome those who wish to come in for a consultation and learn more about what they have to offer.

Marketing Laws by Dave Swift, Part II
If you think of marketing as simply advertising, you are way off base. There is much more involved in marketing, which include marketing laws that must be followed. Marketing Guru Dave Swift tells Patrick Dougher of tThe Business Spotlight what the difference between advertising and marketing is, and some of the marketing laws that must be followed.
Advertising is simply an element of marketing, just as promotions are. Almost everything a vender tries to sell you is an element of marketing, but is not marketing itself.

Tax Talk With Plano CPA Jeff Pickering
Patrick Dougher of DoerTV speaks with Jeff Pickering, a CPA, about tax loopholes and other tax questions on this edition of Tax Talk on Google+ Hangout.
Even though the tax year of 2013 is over, you can make a contribution on your IRA up until April 15, 2014 to take a credit on your 2013 taxes. There are a number of other deductions that it is not too late to claim on your tax return for this year. Jeff speaks more on IRA deductions and penalties, as well as Roth conversions, on this edition of Tax Talk.
In other editions of Tax Talk, Jeff has given examples of how people made a simple mistake on their tax forms, or did not use the correct forms, and it cost them up to $10,000 in penalties. There are so many tax loopholes that most people are not aware of, and that most programs that help people do their taxes themselves do not address.
Another example concerned a couple where the wife has terminal cancer, and Jeff addresses the planning issue and tax loopholes that can crop up when it comes to tax planning.
What happens when you pass away and you own property? He explains the tax rule – “Step Up” where property was given away and appreciated after the death. What happens if you are about to inherit property, but you will die first before the property changes hands? When you inherit property you will inherit it at the fair market value, so in a case like this it is best to consult a tax specialist, like Jeff, to find out which way to go. Loopholes like this in the tax code are tricky to understand, but a master tax specialist understands them and can steer you in the best way to save you on taxes.
Some states are community property states, like Texas. Many people don’t understand this concept. Half of everything the husband owns the wife has an interest in, and vise versa, so if the house or property is only in one name the spouse still has an interest in it. In some other states that are not community property states, if you own property in your name your spouse does not have a vested interest in it. It is best to understand your state’s rules, and not assume that your spouse’s property will be transferred to you when they die.

Financial Planning with CPA Ken Kendall
Ken Kendall is this week’s guest of The Business Spotlight, with host Patrick Dougher. Ken is a CPA, who is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) who is working to help individuals in financial planning that can help to ensure their finances for the future, for themselves and their families.
Ken’s business looks at insurance, investments, taxation and legal documents that have to do with estate planning and so on. “If I have a client who retires and they say, ‘I couldn’t have done this without the planning,’ or if I talked with a survivor family where someone has passed away and they’ve had the insurance and documents in place, or children going off to college partly because of the help that we were able to give mom and dad putting the money away. Those are the kinds of things that help you get recommitted and rebuild the passion for the business,” Ken says.
He goes on to say, “There is no such thing as NO RISK. You have to learn what risks you’re trying to mitigate, which risks you’re trying to take on yourself. That’s true not only in insurance, but in financial planning and investment planning – everything really. There are always risks and tradeoffs and so on.”
In addition to personal and family financial planning, Ken has made it his mission to help improve the financial growth in DPW area local businesses by helping improve their reach to the community. He did this by establishing a network through the social media, “LinkedIn.” Currently his network has over 4,200 members who interact with one another offline, through physical meetings; and online – one on one, or as a group discussion. Ken masterminded the group, and his goal was to concentrate on just the immediate 15-20 miles radius of his residence in Flower Mound, Texas.
His idea was to get local businesses together to network and help each other grow their businesses. The group, entitled “Linking Together DFW,” has been in existence for about three years, and began with a conversation at a meeting where he said he was intrigued by the idea of the social media LinkedIn, and was trying to find a way to make it work for business purposes.
He started a local business group and started connecting with local business people, and the idea just took off. “According to the LinkedIn profiles, 40% of them are business owners and 20% are senior level executives. Because we are a local group, we can have local events. We have a couple of live events a month, and those are pretty well attended. We have a great time. There’s been a great camaraderie that’s developed among the people in this group.”
This group has helped him attract more clients, through personal contact, and has helped other businesses do the same. “Anybody who’s in business is trying to find the people who they can serve and the people who need their services, says Ken. “One of the difficult challenges anybody has in business is how to go out and find the people who need what you have to talk about? I think this has been a real good opportunity for people to meet other people on a pretty low-key basis and just build a relationship, and if there’s something that comes out of it from a business standpoint, that’s a plus.”
If you’re in the DFW area, connect with Ken. The name of the group, again, is Linking Together DFW North Texas. You can access them through the website LinkingDFW.com, or through LinkedIn social network.
You can also contact Ken directly concerning your own financial planning by email at: Ken@KendallFinancial.net.; through his company website at: KendallFinancial.net; or by phone at: (800) 342-4698 or the local line at: (972) 874-8757.
